2011 Goals – An Update

Picture I made for my goals article

That’s the update.

Half the year done, and I haven’t done JACK.

Let’s go over the list, shall we?

Work on being a better photographer.  I’ve barely taken any pictures, those I have taken have been on my cell phone, and I haven’t charged my digital camera in months.

Strive to write every day.  I wasn’t doing well with this one previously, but in the last three or four weeks I’ve been doing better.  I have been writing every day.  And I feel much better.

Delightfully Happy blog – now defunct.  I really wanted to succeed with this one, but I just couldn’t keep it up.  Not because I couldn’t find something to be happy about every day, but because I had so much going on I didn’t have time to post.  I kept a list in MS Word for a while, hoping to post as I had time, but I got so far behind I finally gave up.

Do not keep Netflix movies longer than 2 weeks.  Miserable fail.  I’ve had one for at least two months, I swear.  But now, with Netflix’s new pricing, I soon won’t have any DVDs from Netflix to keep, so…Win?

Use new veggies.  Um, yeah.  I did Baby Eggplant.  And I think I did another veggie.  But yet another massive fail.

Watch more hockey.  Fail.

Visit 5 places in the 1000 Places to See Before You Die list.  Nada.  Yet.  I plan on going to Charleston in a couple of months.  I looked into the Spoleto Festival, and it wasn’t quite what I expected (or was interested in, to be honest).

Watch movies from the AFI list.  Count:  0

Read 12 books from the BBC 100 List.  Now, I did try, I swear.  I read Wuthering Heights, and hated every second of it.  Then I tried reading Love in the time of Cholera, and I wanted to dig my eyeballs out so I couldn’t read it anymore.  I didn’t finish.  And that’s when I gave up.  (Although, I have started reading Pride and Prejudice, and am so far enjoying it.)

Overall, as you can tell, massive fail.  But I did so well last year – do I get credit for that?

How are you doing on your 2001 resolutions and goals?

Baby Eggplant

You know when you’re in the grocery store, or at the Farmer’s Market, and you see a vegetable that you have no idea what to do with or how it tastes?

One of my (new) goals for 2011 is to pick that vegetable up and figure out what to do with it after the fact.

I was at the farmer’s market on Saturday and saw baby eggplant.  I thought, well, why not?  I grabbed four.  When I got home, I looked it up, to see what I should do with it.  Turns out, it’s pretty much exactly like eggplant, just…smaller.  So similar, in fact, that I couldn’t really find much information on them!  So my first foray into new vegetables turns out to be not so new.

I hate twitter

I’ve tried.  Honestly, over the past few years, I’ve tried.  I’ve opened two twitter accounts.  I simply don’t get it.  I feel really stupid, actually, because I really, really don’t get it.  I don’t get how to read it.  I don’t get how it’s fun.  I don’t get anything.

Regardless of that, I was going to suffer through twitter for a year, as part of my 2011 goal to document something I’m happy about every day.  I posted something on January 1st.  Then I attempted to add the twitter feed to my blog sidebar.  And couldn’t do it.  After about five attempts, I gave up.  I don’t know if it’s a twitter thing, a wordpress thing, or user error, but regardless, the only reason I was doing twitter was to feed it onto my blog.  So I gave up.

I thought about doing it via a daily post (which would have qualified me for the wordpress post-a-day challenge), but there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to post every day, and besides, that’s a lot of needless, boring posts, IMO.

So I was going to go with a 2011 Happiness Page on the blog, but that would be a really long page.

Instead, I’m going to do a post a week, and put it into the “2011 Happiness Project” category.  That means I have to be more diligent about remembering and/or writing it down each day, even if I can’t access a computer.  It’s not nearly as simple as a twitter feed would have been.

But I hate twitter.

To a Better Year

Did you know that people have been making New Year’s Resolutions since 2000 BC?  It started with paying off debts and returning borrowed goods, and it evolved into vows of good conduct made to the Roman God Janus.

You would think with all the practice, people would be better at fulfilling their New Year’s Resolutions.  But, I guess, if people were that good at fulfilling them, they wouldn’t really need them, since they would constantly be improving themselves throughout the year as they saw the need.

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions, and yet I tend to make some each year.  But I’ve given up the Resolutions that never get fulfilled, instead making those year-round goals, and I’ve started making resolutions that are actually fun and that I’m fully capable of doing.  It’s not about changing my life forever, it’s about doing something this year and this year only.  If it progresses past a year, great.  But it’s only about This Year.

Last year, I was determined to pay more attention to each day by taking a picture every day.  And I’ve done a fairly decent job at doing that, missing only 21 days over the year.  Of course, I had no idea when I decided to take a picture a day that my year was going to be…less than wonderful.  Regardless, I had a lot of fun doing it, and I learned a lot about myself in the process.

I’m hoping that 2011 is a much better year for me.  I’m hosting an open house tomorrow, asking my friends to come over and help fill my home with good mojo.  I have some sage and will be doing a smudging ceremony.  I’m working on cleaning out and lightening the clutter.  But none of these are New Year’s Resolutions, they are simply things I want to do and am in the process of doing.

So, what are my New Year’s Resolutions?  You know, those Resolutions I don’t like to make.  I’ve listed them on my 2011 Goal Page, and will be tracking them there, if you have an inclination to follow along.  I may add some as the year progresses.

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?  What are they?  Or do you do something else, instead?
